Randy Burton
Principal

A native Houstonian, Randy Burton attended Yale University where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Following graduation, Mr. Burton spent nine years in the oil and gas industry in Houston which has provided him with an extensive knowledge of the oil and gas business. He obtained his law degree from South Texas College of Law in 1983. Mr. Burton's legal career has included service as an Assistant District Attorney for the Harris County District Attorney's Office where he was Chief Prosecutor of the Family Offenses Section and an association with a Houston corporate law firm.

Since 1990, Mr. Burton has maintained an active business practice with emphases on general commercial litigation, environmental law, construction law. He has also represented numerous clients before state and federal administrative agencies. He has extensive experience in helping corporate clients who have been victimized by fraud. His litigation experience includes the successful trial and appeal of a suit to remove cloud on title, Burd v. Armistead, 982 S.W.2d 31 (Tex. App.-Houston [1st Dist.] 1998, rev. denied) and the litigation and appeal of two complex property tax cases: Virginia Indonesia Company v. Harris County Appraisal District, 910 S.W. 2d 905 (Tex. 1995) and Martin Apparatus & Equipment v. Harris County Appraisal District, 44 S.W.3d 190 (Tex. App.-Houston [14th Dist.] 2001 rev. denied). Mr. Burton has also represented companies in a wide variety of disputes from both the defense and plaintiff side.

A major emphasis of Randy Burton’s work involves the Uniform Commercial Code, particularly, Article 2 (Sales). He has litigated warranty and indemnity claims for and against a number of Houston-based manufacturers. He has used his experience and knowledge of Article 2 to assist many of his clients with developing or revising their terms & conditions of sale and purchase and has negotiated a numerous large contracts on their behalf. Randy has also developed a proficiency for developing, negotiating, and defending contractual indemnities including compliance with the Texas and Louisiana Anti-Indemnity Statutes. Compliance issues with the Anti-Indemnity statutes frequently arise under purchase or sales agreements for equipment manufacturers for the onshore and offshore oil and gas drilling and production industry. Randy is a member of the State Bar of Texas Business Law Section UCC Committee as well as of its Article 2 Subcommittee study group.

Mr. Burton is the founder and spokesperson for the national child advocacy group, Justice for Children. Mr. Burton gained particular notoriety for his special investigations into the reporting and prosecution of child abuse cases and has appeared on numerous local and national TV programs including ABC's Prime Time Live, 20/20, Good Morning America, HBO, the Discovery Channel, and Donahue. He is the author of numerous articles concerning his child advocacy work and has received a number of awards in recognition for his work with abused and neglected children including the 2002 e-town award (a national radio variety show) achievement award for the founding of Justice for Children, the Kim Houston Award presented in 1999 by The Victims' Resource Institute with the University of Houston Psychological Research and Services Center awarded to the individual who has made outstanding contribution to improve the lives of victims of crime in the Houston area. In 1998, he received the City of Houston's 14th Annual Mayor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in the Social Service Category. He is also the recipient of the Outstanding Young Lawyer of Houston (1987-88) from the Houston Bar Association.

Mr. Burton is the recipient of American Institute of Architects (Houston) President’s Award, and is a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and long-term member of the Pro Bono College of The State Bar of Texas. He has been frequently listed in Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who. Mr. Burton is a member of the Oil & Gas Section and the Environmental Law Section of the Houston Bar Association.
